I think I would be more inclined to do something like this. But you need to do due diligence and at least estimate how much cooling you will need. This calculator and the device datasheet should get you a ballpark figure. Down the page are typical values for case-heatsink combinations, the rest should be in the datasheet.

Thanks so much, Yaakov! Another issue that has come up is the plastic outlet covers break when I plug into them. I thought about using metal plates, but the ground (green) of the outlet sockets touch the metal frame. Is this death and dangerous? I know it's so elementary, but I'm an artist by trade - an engineer by the seat of my pants.

The frame of the outlet should be connected to ground any way so it doesn't change anything Just be sure oyu have a good ground. I would suggest a good outlet tester (my favorite model) for your gig bag. Always check the wiring fo anything provided by the house before plugging in, it's the best practice anyway.

Brilliant, I really appreciate your help. I'll spend an hour or two replacing all the face plates. You state a "good ground" - I'm guessing the frame of my generator is ample enough. I cannot do better, as I perform outdoors in an urban environment. Driving a metal stake into the ground wont happen....
