There seems something fundamentally wrong with this schematic to me.??

Me too. How do you pass DC through a capacitor directly off of a bridge rectifier? (Figure 3, page 8)

U1 & U5 "Vin" wire traces are poorly drawn and I thought the reference voltage was supposed to be across "Vout" and ground, and NOT on the "Vin".

U7 seems to be wired backwards with the "Vin" looking like it's being powered by the LCD's supply and it's back-regulating to the power supply.

That's just what I noticed with my limited experience.

Completely missed that one.

Looks like that circuit was drawn by someone who knows nothing about electronics. Probably not good with a street map either.

I like that the PIC has to pull the LED cathodes negative for them to turn on.

 

Anyone notice anything that appears to be correct in the schematic?

I hope this is not a peer-reviewed journal.

That says it all! Don't they accept papers having >15% quality?
Perhaps electrons behave differently in Nigeria and we're misconstruing the schematic .

If the circle within a circle is the motor, then it's running on double rectified pulsating DC with no control, all the rest is just window dressing. D3 is long gone.
