I realize this is the off topic section of the forum but you come to an electronics forum to create one post asking about carpet dye? Really???

If a carpet needs to by dyed then it is probably time for it to be replaced. I cannot imagine the mess with dying a carpet.

Before you dye, you need to know what fibers you are dying. Polyolefin is impossible, wool is hard to prevent staining so it dyes easily. You will need the right product for the fiber (I should better say it as, "only dye wool or nylon"

Even that is too general. "Nylon 6" does not dye as well as "nylon 66". It is not possible for the consumer to tell them apart - you'll need the manufacturers label.

Recent wool carpets need to be treated (strongly washed) to remove stain resistant treatments (it looks splotchy if all stain resistance is not removed). Older wool should be cleaned - it picks up oils very well over the years and prevents dying which also causes a splotchy look.

Here is an ethical manufacturer with "how to" instructions for a DIY dye - and many discouraging pieces of advice.
