Can you have diagonal components in a perfboard layout?

I've recently gotten into making guitar pedal layouts on perfboard and I was wondering if there was any problems with having resistors or capacitors laid out diagonally, I've only seen one reference to it on a pedal forum but it sounded like he personally disliked them because he also said that he wouldn't have resistors standing on one end and if that was a serious issue then the entire Japanese electronics industry would've been in dire straits last century lol. I have done a fuzz face with one diagonal resistor and it sounded pretty good

I make a resistor array of where 24 resistors lay in a circle at 24 different angles. Same value for all. The incursion machines slow down slightly doing that. On the other hand, using the same value speeds things up.
People will laugh when they see many different angles. I have had problems with manufacturing engineers. I often do "strange" things to make the product better. Modern machines can put the parts in the board at any directions. If the layout is better, do it.

The physical orientation of a component doesn’t matter much as long as the electrical connections are proper. Good layout practice can make a board easier to build and troubleshoot, though.
It all depends on the application!!! Resistors standing is OK in a TV set, but in the CDI board for a two stroke motorcycle engine it will not last very long. It will fail from broken resistor leads.
Mechanical vibration will cause things to move and it will cause parts to fail. In applications without vibration it does not matter.
Military electronics is usually built to last 20 years installed without shock mounts, in a tank drive 50 MPH over rocky ground for 10,000 miles, without failure.
So like most parts of engineering there is a compromise.
And in some applications, do not put resistors on a perf-board because "it looks funny."

It's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I prefer components to be on a tenth inch grid and aligned as much as possible.

Given a block of resistors, axial capacitors, diodes, whatever - if you stagger every other one 0.1", then it is much more difficult for a scope probe hanging off of one component lead to make contact with the component next door.
