My 0.02...

When I took Embedded Systems (Circa ~06) I hated it too. We were programming the M68HC12, which I despise. To top it off, the professor was awful. The course was fast, it was all done in assembly, which I got the idea, but struggled with the details, but I hated having to learn a new 'language'... and I ended up getting a B or C in the class. That class alone pushed me to go to another direction - towards analog. I have found analog design to be very lucrative financially and it is very fun and challenging. I really enjoy it. The funny thing is that the more I design the more that I find that the testing is best done using microcontrollers for the extremely low frequency stuff (I.E. battery discharge curves, solar array IV curves, etc. So I've had to learn to program uC's. Admittedly, I'm a hack - and a real embedded designer would cringe at my code.

You do what needs done. If you're smart and driven then you can figure out just about anything if you need to.
