Is there a way to clear my news feed after unfollowing a user, or does it automatically get cleared after a certain length of time? Some of the entries in mine are over three weeks old.

Just another feature I don't use.
I suppose you can neglect to click on that page, too.

Right. Posts made by users that you follow will appear in your news feed. So posts that you make appear in your followers' news feeds.
