For much of the believers sect it's not about the environment and never was. It's about having some larger than life undefinable scapegoat entity they can blame every self inflicted shortcoming and unfortunate event in their and everyone else's lives on that absolutely no one can do anything about.
If it exists or you perceive it to exist and you don't want to take responsibility for it, even if you caused it, just blame it on AGW/Climate Change and you are automatically absolved of all responsibility for any self inflicted screw ups.
It's the modern day devil. No matter whats wrong, or you percieve to be wrong, you can blame him/it even if they are 100% your own making.
Patrick Moore has become a reasonable, respectable gentleman -- unlike the emotionally crippled children he left behind.

I think that what happens to people when they run out of options in a weak defence of something. The more they dig to find solid proof to back up their beliefs the more contradictory evidence they expose themselves to instead.
At some point they find themselves stuck at a crossroad of having to either accept they were more wrong than right or they have to accept they are going to have to deny, discredit, redirect attention away from the topic and outrightly lie their butts off while hoping no one notices, which someone always does, to hold up their own belief systems which ultimately just makes the opposition appear that much more credible.
The believers have screamed bloody terror about everything and how bad it was going to get for over 20 - 30 years now yet not one of their predictions came anywhere close to being true. In fact too many either fell well within the already known and established normal ranges of natural climate limits thus showing no change or went totally opposite showing opposing change.
I have every reason to believe that's why the cry of 'Global Warming' was changed to Climate Change instead because being this is a live and dynamic planet the climate is and always will be changing no one can deny their claim that the climate is changing thus by false proxy makes them feel they are right even if it's for the wrong and largely false reasoning.
Both similar reasons why Patrick Moore left Greenpeace. The direction they started going was counter (extremist not rationalistic) to what established confirmable science and generally well understood environmental conservation practices have proven to be both viable and in many ways even beneficial to nature and humans in all levels.
