What is the simplest method of creating a program on the PC side (Windows) with a GUI to show/interact with data from a micro controller?

My programming experience is roughly 4 years with microcontrollers, 8-bit to 32-bit (Microchip PIC's), in C and a little experience with assembly. I have done one or two PC applications in C but they were strictly command prompt based applications.

I think I saw a book about using Python in a copy of Circuit Cellar (it was an ad) but I have never used or have seen Python.

Any web resources or book suggestions would be appreciated.

That varies from person to person....

If you start on programming for PC, you might as well start with the latest ones, like VB.NET or C#.
