A barcode reader is a complex device - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode_reader

As you can see, there are several ways for one to work. You would probably be better off simply purchasing one that attaches to the keyboard cable of a computer. That way a scanned ID get entered as if it had been typed in.
