What was the first version of ward leonard system?

How the problems in 1st version were removed in later version using MG set?

 

Check Wikipedia, the first was was introduced by Harry Ward Leonard 1891.
I remember it back in the 50's.

It was my understanding that the original W.L. system, although efficient, involved a great deal of machinery and floor space, with the advent of large power semi-conductor devices, electronic methods were devised enabling the same efficiency or better, and much more compact systems.
