I run a patent training program and I've been receiving several requests lately from law firms looking for EEs to become technical specialists and patent agents (without going to law school). Since EEs are in high-demand in this field, we have a 100% placement rate for EEs over the past 7 years. Although there is typically a financial investment for the training, we now have law firms that will sponsor training costs as well (contingent upon the individual accepting employment with the law firm). Starting salary for EEs is generally between $90-$100K, and there are also some opportunities to work remotely. I’m sorry you feel so negatively about the patent system, but your cynicism intrigued me enough to review some of Don Lancaster’s teachings. One thing that I noticed is that most of his qualms with the patent system seem to be around the small inventor being taken advantage of. I believe that this can be true in many cases because they do not know what to expect, how to navigate the waters, or how to check their attorney or agent. Most firms do work for larger companies and add value to these companies bottom line everyday. However there are ways for inventors to avoid costly mistakes upfront if they due their due diligence. Dons teachings also don’t seem to provide much of an alternative than just publishing ideas widely and having tons of ideas, which has its own inherent set of flaws. I can’t say that I’ve read his teachings in-depth but I can tell you that this is a lucrative and rewarding career choice for many. Not for everyone, but everything isn’t for everybody.

Hi Alec_t, yes that is in US dollars. The law firms we are working with are based in the U.S., however some do have international branches and some allow remote work as well.

 

You can scan the archives of this board and find numerous requests for people to fulfill various jobs and positions. AFAIK there have been very few of them that resulted in any kind of positive or useful engagement. Mostly because people make this request without understanding what is involved in engaging a professional. I'm not saying you are in this category, but I am saying that given my familiarity with the active population here, that very few of them are likely to be interested in your offer.

Thank you for your candid feedback, and I can appreciate your perspective. However, we have a known track record for helping engineers and scientists to transition into this industry. Here are just a few individuals that we have launched their careers as technical specialists and patent agents. Some have then gone on to become attorneys.
