Thanks, Max. Old fart with old habits; scraping the enamel would make it worse with old hands and vision :(
Will have to use the 'inside' telephone pair wire instead, peeling its insulation. Have plenty of that...

Aha, that's just stupid given it is a metallic product. I was thinking, for silver that's a reasonable price.
Yes.
I wanted some tin sheet. I found a company that did aluminium, brass, and tin sheet. I ordered some tin sheet.
What actually arrived was tin-plated steel plate  They gave me my money back without argument and they have changed the wording now.

I use a lot this plain wire for prototyping, and my reel is nearing the end.

eBay is frequently more expensive than retail. It must be the allure.

Early on, there were lots of real auctions and bargains. For example, I got 1000 resharpened carbide PCB bits for $0.01 each. Used stuff can be cheaper, but not always. There are still auctions, but much -- maybe most -- of the traffic is retail.

One even sees vendors selling on eBay who ship from Amazon Prime as a "gift." In other words, they sign up for Prime, buy from Amazon, drop ship to you, and profit from the arbitrage. You get the advantage of 2-day shipping without having to sign up for Prime.

I salvage scrap telephone cable from construction sites.
Do they still do telephone installations?
They haven't given up on twisted pair, yet.

When I was a youth, we'd pick up ~10ft sections of 200 pair aerial cable cutoffs the phone company would drop after installations. Cutting off the jacket was a lot of work, but boy did that give us wire for a long time.

I know what you mean, but RJ54 is a jack pinout standard, or it has loaned its name to the 8-pin modular connection used for Ethernet over twisted pair, but you really mean CATn cable.
Here at the Uni we're AV guys so we're using different cabling all the time, not excluding Coax for HDSDI. But, your right we've over simplified names of cable, sorry bout that.

Once again, communication is king.

Edit: Don't get me started on Cat6, bugger.

I've worked in A/V, and at a university, and both at the same time. I have to say, I really don't like the technology silo that AMX and Crestron have cerated. The cargo cult programming of the systems is a serious mess too. We had problems that lead to failed signal routing which turned out to be power supply problems in the rack even though it looked like failure of video transmitters and was temporarily corrected by replacement three times.

Every other week IT is port scanning, 2 buildings with old series 2 processors are coughing up their guts. Only hard reboots are helping it's the only bandage we have, we use DMPS alone or RMPC3 in combo with C2NIO, controlling Extron IN1606 Video and Audio Switcher. Series 3 processors are replacing them now since we're on a 7 year cycle, hopefully they find a solution to the port scans.

Get them to allocate a VLAN for your gear and treat that VLAN differently. They can secure that VLAN without doing aggressive vuln testing on it.
