A noob question about transistors

I was wondering what kind of information you can get just by looking at a transistor.

I was also wondering if these two transistors (http://imgur.com/a/4fifi) are the same in regards to their "specs".

(Yes, the second picture is of my board at it's a little dusty. I need tips on how to clean it without damaging anything.)

Thanks in advance.

As far as your original question? By looking at a component and performin a Google search of the markings will often (not always) turn up a description and often a datasheet. The latter will give you the full specifications of the component.

A quick Google search shows that these are not transistors. They are 3.3V voltage regulators.

Yes, they are voltage regulators. My bad, I mistyped it because I was still thinking of the first question. Anyways, do they have the same specifications or the "942N12" and "209J77" make they differ in any way?
Thank you for your reply =)

Generally IPA (isopropyl alcohol) is a good PCB cleaner. Apart from general muck it will also remove excess flux. It is safe for the board but it is flammable and not good to breathe so ventilation is important and no smoking while using it.

Transistors, Voltage Regulators, and generally speaking everything else (sugar and spice and everything nice). You will learn, as dl324 mentions, that the data sheet will become your new best friend. Data sheets just require time to understand them. Sort of like learning a new language which is really what electronics is all about. Anyway, learn to read and understand data sheets.

Welcome to AAC and ask any questions you may have.

Probably just date code and manufacturing plant information. Check a data sheet.
