I am stuck on the highlighted problem 14.12. It wants me to use a 555 in astable mode with an inverter to produce a pulse generator for the listed variable frequency ranges. The problem is I dont know where to start, and this text book is very bad when it comes to examples and explanation. if anyone can give me clear instructions how to solve this problem, would be strongly appreciated.

Once you have an astable oscillator working (don't worry about what frequency or being able to change the frequency ranges, just get an oscillator working at any reasonable frequency, say something in the 1 kHz range), what can you do to set the duty cycle? What can you do to change the frequency (using a fixed capacitor value)? How does changing the frequency change the duty cycle?
