There is a lot of existing code available for the 16F84. Will code written for the 16F84 (and 16F84A) run with no changes on the 16F628A?

Depends how the code is written, but I would imagine that most code will not work.

There a many differences, most notably a different memory map and different configuration bits.

At the minimum, I would think that configuration bits would need changes.

Depending on program complexity and how the program is written, I imagine changes could be somewhere between trivial to significant.

Have not tried it though, just going by data sheets and very limited experience.

I would think that low complexity programs might be fairly easy to convert even with low to moderate programming experience.
