12 VOLT AND 16 VOLT CIRCUITS SHARING THE SAME GROUND?

I am building a mud race truck and am running a 12 v battery and a 16 v battery. the 16v battery powers all my non factory components. the 12 v battery powers all my factory components. The truck makes about 70 second runs and does not have an alternator. My question is can they share the chassis as a ground?
