Default low profile quadrature encoder

I am looking for a very low profile encoder to go on the end of a motor shaft. I only have about 1/4" of end shaft to hook on to. I can mount a pulse wheel no problem but only have limited space between the motor housing and the wheel. Any ideas?

I am also looking at the possibility of using a shaft mounted encoder with a gear drive.

Bob

As always, the devil is in the requirement details. What type of encoder resolution and output do you need?

20 pulses per rev would be more than enough, no matter if I use the motor end or a shaft/gear drive.
Will have to post a picture of the motor end, would explain better then words.

Perhaps an opto interrupter would work.
