How to open .rar files?

Hi,
Can someone tell me how to open a file with an extention .rar? Is there any free software there to open such files?

i think only winrar can handle them
download it after googling winrar

i m not sure though what happens after its trial expires.

btw ......
shud i also suggest extracting the inner contents is also possible after u right click on the file....
a lot of options related to winrar pop up (try ur luck fiddling with them u'll learn more)
a file can be compressed using winrar.

Just so you know WinRar is not freeware, it is shareware.

I think 7-zip also opens these archives, but I'm not sure. But 7-zip is the best compressor between freeware and not so free compressors.

The free one (open source) is unRAR. I think there is a version for Windows, although it is a console only program.

IIRC, altough 7-zip can unpack RAR archives it requires a proprietory plugin to pack/read them.
