an electronic circuit detects open and short circuit

Dear Friends
I want to build a circuit that detect a short and open circuit between two wires. when the two wires are short, a led lights when open, led turn off.

If I'm getting it right then you should be able to do it very easily.

Just take a battery , connect it with a wire to LED . Put a switch and crocodile plugs in between and your circuit is ready.

Method to Test: Put the crocodile pins on the terminals of the circuit or wire arrangement. IF the Led glows circuit is intact and if doesn't it's open.

Not quite. A current limiting resistor is needed to not burn out the LED.

This is a little old but it worked circa 1955, cable 13 twisted pair ,1400 ft,long. Normal procedure for breaks was to flex cable and hope to get a hit; slow and unrelyable; I designed a cable fault panel which switch select faulted pair: 1 check capacity vs good pair, with bridge ckt.to determine approx. distance; inject a 4kHz signal and with hand held high gain amplifier & head phones quickley found exact point of break. Could also measure resistance compaded to good pair to find approx location of short. No LEDs back then.
