I want to control a wi fi module via a microcontroller. Can anybody suggest a microcontroller and a wi fi module which serves the purpose?
Are there any similar projects?
Is there a specific manufacturer I should turn to?

As for microcontroller, it depends a lot on your intended application, what else the micro has to do beside talking to the Wi-Fi module and the data rate that you need.
