why k type thermocouple is popular

Link provided by you shows useful ranges of different thermocouples.

1. What does useful range means here??? That we should use TC in that range also.
2. But if useful range is son small then why does TC have shown such wide range,

e.g K-type has range of -270C to 1372c, but link shows useful range only 95 to 1260C
 
Atmosphere compatability in part is important. There are three major types (J,K); (R,S) and T.

T is good for cryogenic work, but a diode sensor is the best. RTD's are great too, but with a limited range.

Platinum is an expensive metal.

For T, pure copper has issues with corrosion.

Where I worked we had to use C themocouples for copper because of the high temperatures.

Some of our readouts were limited to 200C or larger for K. It takes more work to linearize over a larger range.
