When charging my dead iPad with an ATX PSU, the wires got very hot. Why?

I connected the 5V rail of the PSU to the VCC of the stripped USB cable, and GND to GND. What rail can I use instead of the 5V rail?

Does it work with that connection? Does it recharge the Ipad properly? If it works then let it be used, If it damages the ipad then there is a problem.

Possibly the PSU wires are experiencing Inrush current. Converters are also known also to have inrush.
I have some circuits, in simulation the oscilloscope on first capacitor shows huge initial surge in turn it is felt on the regulators and down stream.
Possibly to protect or prolong your circuit you may need a thermistor and capacitor if that is what is happening.
