High voltage MOSFETS cost much more than IGTBs for similar voltage.

But you only need 7 amps. There are lots of FETs that can do that for about 1/2 the cost and use a smaller heat sink.
Do you just want to use an IGBT?

IGBTs are slow because the output structure is an emitter follower.

 

That is a decent part but going obsolete not even found on digikey.

From the switching waveforms whats the minimum voltage and current curves needed in SOA for a device?

From your picture it looks like >450 volts @ >7 amps.

That part has an isulated tab which makes it run very hot.

405v @ >7amps and what duration? SOA areas are specified by duration.

You IBGT is much hotter due to it's Vce drop.

 

IGBTs do get much hotter but they are less expensive at higher voltages past the max voltage of the part you liked which is a very decent part. I should obtain it since its going obsolete and its cost is likely going decrease.

Wouldn't the required SOA be only 7amps for about 20uS?

All I know from your picture is that the maximum current is 7 amps and the blocking voltage is 430 volts.
I'm sure you know more since it's your circuit.
