The neurotoxin is produced by specific bacteria. Some octopus also use the same trick. Deadly stuff.

Watched Discovery on it once, only reason puffers can handle it is they have a mutated nervous system, so it isn't deadly to them.

Interesting how the Discovery article and Wikipedia diverge, I would tend to believe the Wikipedia first. TV shows love their drama.

The deadly Tiger Fugu (Pufferfish) is renown for its excellent sushi and liver...with one Caveat...if the chef is slightly im-precise in cleaning it...you will expire after one bite. There is no known antidote.

It think the liver is one of the organs that is off limits. The stories I've heard about it is the poisoning occurs when the chef accidentally nicks the liver, and poisons the rest of the meat.

Either way, I'll pass. Raw fish is not to die for.
