So I'm cruising the local electronics website and I see the section 2 way radio's 22 channels. Looking at them I was stunned how far a pair of $30 walkie Talkies have progressed. 36 mile range, etc.. I've been looking for small data transfers over long distances. May be a couple bytes. Do you think I could hack into these and make them hook up and uses like morris code to transmit the data? I know it would be hard and above my level right now but is the theory sound? Could I hook in a uC or DSP to the mic and speaker and Tx and Rx clicks or beeps as binary. Like I said 2-3 bytes a day would be fine.

You could use a phone MTMF transmitter/receiver chip, such as this, to send tone codes over the link. It has 12 tones but you could just use the one and zero code to send binary.
