I have a pair of old boom box speakers with bare wire connectors that I want to use with my Plasma TV. The TV has RCA connectors.

How do I rig the speaker wires to the RCA plugs/wires?

I have some extra RCA cables that I can scavage to marry the two.

I know the speakers have + and - connectors.

I've tried it a couple of ways with no success, but maybe it's just been a long day...

The TV is hooked uo to Direct TV as well, sould I hook the speakers into the DIrect TV box, or directly into the TV?

Don't really have much to go on, as you didn't post the specifications of your TV or the "boom box" speakers. Generally, speakers have either 4 or 8 Ohms impedance, and they need an amplifier to match their impedance to the source of the sound.

Your plasma TV probably has "line out" jacks. These were not designed to drive speakers. They probably have 10,000 Ohms impedance. You need an amplifier to go between the two.

If you want to do this "on the cheap", look for a decent audio amplifier at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill store.

You could build a custom amplifier, but it won't be nearly as quick nor cheap as the above suggestion.
