Can anyone comment on the usefulness of MATLAB in circuit design, analysis and in modeling state machines etc for FPGA/DSP design?

I have used Matlab to observe the behaviour of control systems by using models of several real systems. It is useful because you can see how a real system behaves without the need to build the system. The accuracy of the simulation depends on how accurate the model is to the real system of course. Also, you can build circuits by inserting components in the Matlab workspace and simulate the circuit. You can do image processing and mechanical engineering related simulations.

With the right packages, MATLAB is a powerfull software, used to communicate with DSPs (quick Fourier analysis, signal treatment, etc...), send commands to controllers, calculate voltage and current for big complex circuits (non-linear equations calculations), filtering large matrix (image processing and filtering), etc... lots of possibilities, it really is up to you and what you can do with MATLAB.
