If you go directly to the http://www.national.com website and enter LM3914 (or 15 or 16) into the search box you'll get access to the full data sheet that has tons of info in it as well as a lot of application notes that illustrate the many ways the IC can be used.

If you want a single 10-LED bar graph, then use the LM3916 VU meter IC.
If you want more than 10 LEDs, use the LM3915 logarithmic IC's.
The LM3914 will not work well for music, as humans basically hear in decibels, which is much closer to a logarithmic scale than a linear scale.

If you want the different spacings of an LM3916 VU meter then use only one.
If you want logarithmic equal spacings and/or want to cascade them then use logarithmic LM3915s.
