After cruising Google, I have found it difficult to find a tutorial and/or experiments kit for understanding the nuts and bolts of the USB technology. I was hoping to find something that would start from the very basic ground and go upward. I know this is a very involved process, but I am willing to work through it. I am sure its not for the faint of heart.

You should learn the ins and outs of the standard first. Then any project or kit will make more sense.

I suggest you to buy and read the book(as recommended by papabravo) first followed by USB specification document. There is a lot of terminology that would give you headache if you dont have basic knowledge of USB.

 

Elektor do some nice projects involving USB and other bus connections you might encounter.
