A universal remote is based on a microprocessor with inputs from a "standard" control keyboard. The different control codes are preset in memory. Some have the ability to read in codes from new remotes and saving them.

The term remote control can be contracted to remote or controller. It is known by many other names as well, such as clicker and also the changer.That's what the remote control is supposed to do...
