well, I did a search first to no avail so this should be an east one for you all.... are ttl ic's known to be really sensitive to static electricity?

I would say no. But that like all circuits they can be destroyed by ESD. You should always have ESD in mind then working with electronics.

Well, I suppose that really needs a bit more qualification.
The really old 74xx, 74Lxx, 74Sxx, and 74LSxx can be damaged by ESD, but are not as sensitive as CMOS parts, like 74Cxx, 74HCxx, etc.

The 4000 series CMOS IC's are quite sensitive to ESD.

But if you handle everything using proper ESD procedures, you won't have to worry about it.
