I want to use a 4017 decade counter to trigger transistor switches, using the switches to change resistance values in a 555 timer circuit. Using the 4017 like a rotary switch. Do you think this would be possible?

 

Yes. Not deadly accurate, but it will work.

 

I think using a multiplexer(analog switch) like 4051/4052 will be better.
