Explain the role of transducers and important characteristics of their behaviour and give example of three different transducers in the area of mechanical engineering by explaining how they function and why they are important.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mechanical engineering, heh? Sounds like you want mechanical to electrical.

I'll give you two, you see if you can come up with a third.

Pot - position of knob can be translated into voltage.
Strain Gage - amount of force, be it pull, push, or shear, is translated into a differential voltage.

An antenna is not mechanical in the slightest, but it is a perfect transducer. It can be used to translate electrical to electromagnetic, or visa versa. Many transducers can work both ways, though it is not a requirement.

Microphones and speakers transfer electrical from/to sound. Motors and generators transfer electrical from/to force and speed.

Important characteristics are bandwidth, dynamic range and linearity.
