The questions of Fairy lights and 10440 lithium ion.

Hey guys I've got a question same topic. Fairy lights. Recently pulled apart a cheap solar light running off a AAA rechargeable. Want to run a 10440 lithium ion instead. I'll figure out the light calculations later. But what kind of protection do I need to keep this from exploding. Do they explode because they can only be discharged so much?
