So I have myself a midi keyboard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midi#Connectors, http://pinouts.ru/Home/Midi_pinout.shtml) and I need to make sure it outputs something - anything - when I press a key. I have a logic probe with switches cmos/ttl and mem/pulse and 2 bench scopes, one with logic functions and one without. Can I perform this test with the logic probe alone? If so, what are the correct settings for the switches and what pins should I connect to? If not, what are the correct settings and connections for the scope?

Don't you have anything else with a Midi port?

Which keyboard is it?

There maybe a service manual available detailing a test mode . Usually you can plug Midi out to in etc.

 

Yes, I have a number of midi devices. My hope is, that I can fimd the correct procedure using logic probe/scope so I can do without any device except the device under test.

You could possibly test very basic functionality with a logic probe.

I've never tried and have never heard of anyone doing it that way, having said that, a logic probe won't tell you if Midi is actually working. It could be outputting garbage.

The only way you will be able to test it properly is to just use Midi-ox on a real PC or laptop unless you have the service manual for the keyboard, and that particular keyboard has a standalone Midi testing routine.
