Squelch control for a "baby monitoring" device

a "VOX" type circuit might work, detect audio from the reciever, and use it to turn the speaker on and off. rectify speaker audio, then charge up an electrolytic that goes to the base of a switching transistor with a relay in the collector to switch the speaker.
