Hi all,
I am looking at replacing some of the Electrolytic Capacitors on the secondary side of my Panasonic VCR SMPS Power Unit, with all 50 volt Tantalum type. Their Capacitances are 3 nos. of 10uF 50v , 3 nos of 100uF 20v, 47uF 50v & a 680uF 50v... I have already tried on a PC SMPS and it has been working fine for last two years with perfect wave output on Oscilloscope

But this being different in this case as it's a 25 year old VCR PC Power Supply, I need your suggestions on whether it's advisable.

 

Don’t.
Tantalums have a nasty habit of blowing up when used as decoupling capacitors.
if they need to be replaced, replace them with electrolytics.

Thanks a lot bro....how about using a normal SMD Chip type capacitor? Just asking...

 

In switching power supplies, I often use SMD capacitors.
I do not like Tantalum because then do not like high current.

Yes. Some types of capacitors have a problem with voltage verses capacitance. Example at 0V 1uF but at 99% voltage 0.45uF. This is OK just as long as you know what is happening and add more capacitors.
