Just wondering guys how hard would it be to make a smoke detector using this development kit?

They even give you a pdf on the topic

If they give you an App note, that's only a start. If you are familiar with microcontroller programming, that's a leg up on the project.

I have experience with silicon labs FM transmitter chips. They do work, and the software they supply to compile the code is decent, but the chips I used could only be programmed permanently ONCE before they were useless (unless you got the code right the first time!).

Check whether you can use their compiler software, check if you need a programmer, and look through the app note to be sure you understand it and feel confident in implementing whatever it says.

I have no personal experience with their other products or smoke detectors, so no help from me there. Silicon labs do have a decent tech support staff also, if you happen to need to inquire about something.

Good luck.
