I am looking for a simple chip or circuit that based on a specific sound will trigger another action on my board. up to 8 sounds about 2 sec long is what I am looking to sample. Can anyone help me with this or point me in the right direction.

More info is needed, such as the types of sounds, the attack/decay, amplitude, frequency, etc.

If the sound is not yet defined, I would suggest using DTMF tones. The generator and decoder chips are available, and the dual tones were designed to not interfere with other pairs.
