Hi all,
I have a toshiba laptop who's power supply delivers 19V 3.95A.

What would happen if I tried to run the laptop off my cars 12V supply?

The notebook should ignore the power and stay running of it's own batteries (best case). Worse case is the battery control circuits die, which means the notebook, as they are all integrated.

You should get a car charger for your notebook, which is a DC-DC Converter that will output the 19V at 4A for charging the battery and running the notebook. Be sure to get one specifically made for your brand, or it may pop up with "Use Authorized Charger Only", and you'll be out however much you paid for the cheap route.

Another option is a 300W inverter that plugs into the lighter socket. Plug your normal charger into the inverter outuput. A 100W may work, but could get hot, check the input specs on your notebook supply.
