In calculating the area for a rectangular conductor of 20mm by 9mm to get it to square meters is it 20 + 9 = 29 x 10-3 squared is the answer 2.9x10-5. Or is it 20x9 =180 x10-3 squared= 1.8x10-4.? I would appreciate any help.

In order to figure out the method, consider a rectangle 500mm x 500mm.
