Replaced capacitor in fluorescent light ballast, and the new one blew right away. Why?

It often is a good idea to replace both electros with the same type of cap. And check the bleed resistors that are usually across the caps. But in your case it does sound like a suspect diode was the original cause.
Let's hope the light remains on :)
