Receivers and speakers

I was browsing some receivers on amazon in hopes of getting rid of my mediocre desktop speakers for something more powerful. Upon reading some of the reviews, I find people are not familiar with compatible speakers for their receivers. Would someone be so kind as to fill me in on what formulas I need to use when matching up receivers and speakers so that I'm not blowing out the cones at volume level 1, but enjoying comfortable yet powerful music and sounds from my pc? Thanks!

It really comes down to impedance matching and power handling capability.

There really is no need for formulas.

You need to match the the impedance of the Rx and speakers for maximum efficiency. These are typically in the 4-16 ohm range.

Then be sure they [speakers] are rated in excess (wattage) in relation to the amp's (or Rx's) power output.
