Elisa Lam, 21, was traveling alone when she was last seen on Jan. 26 at the Cecil Hotel on Main Street in downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Take a deteriorating building, a skid row neighborhood, proximity to a clinic for sex offenders, and serial killers as long-term guests, and you come close to describing the magic of the Cecil Hotel in the 1980s.

I hate LA with a passion. I would have to go there often for business. The only place decent was the Long Beach area. I had the Queen Mary right outside my hotel room window on one stay. I often thought about staying there but from what I understand the rooms are cramped and they have shared bathrooms.

Sounds like places I've stayed. The worst were in DC. Prostitutes would literally knock on your door and ask if you wanna date. The Mormans were probably in town or some church group.

LA has some good parts. The museums of Air, Technology and Natural Science are terrific. I remember when the Technology Museum was in a very small building before they built a new one in the 90's.

My friend was from LA in the 90's. He moved here for about 5 years. Went back home to LA for a visit and was shot in a drive by within 45 minutes of landing. Was in hospital 5 weeks and went from hospital to airport right back home. Said he wasn't ever going back to LA again.

Look at the reviews for the hotel.

That poor girl, I wonder if some low-life travel agency booked her into that nightmare.
They don't look that bad at all. In fact most of them are positive. I've stayed in hundreds of dive motels, and hotels. In this day and age $40 a night in an actual city is crazy cheap! I pay more then that staying at my house. Everyone's said its a shanti hotel that cheap if you want cheap. I personally won't even sleep in a hotel bed and just sleep in all my clothes with a sleeping bag on top, so I'm usually not concerned with niceness as cheapness cause I'm usually stumbling in hallucinating from being up for 3 days, and plan on crashing and leaving ASAP. Cheapest hotel ever I got was in Ohio for $19.99 a night. But it was in BFE!

and the police only waited 2 weeks to search the building????

This is the kind of thing that makes people think of phrases like, "Idiot LEOs".

My family was traveling by train http://www.amtrak.com/coast-starlight-train a few years ago so we needed a hotel in downtown LA close to the station. We stayed at the Westin (free with my cards travel points), it's a very nice place but security was like Fort Knox due homeless and street people. After dark all doors were locked and you needed a card and/or had to pass a security post to go inside the lobby.

Netflix's Cecil Hotel Doc Attempts to Find Out What Happened to Elisa Lam

Infamous CCTV footage of her behaving bizarrely caught the attention of online sleuths who thought it was proof of paranormal activity. The reality is much more grim.
