Reactive Power Regulator

I attach a diagram connection of a Reactive Power Regulator. It says that I can supply it from 90-550V. I actually supply it with 480V. I mean, that's the voltage measurement as well. It's been twice that the rectifier bridge of this device is blowed. I think I have problems in my main grid with high voltage peaks or the bridge is not being capable of handling starting surge.

My question is: can I use a transformer to reduce 480V to 208V, so I supply the device with less voltage? Do you think it may solve the problem? If I do that, does this affect voltage measurement?
