Good afternnoon All About Electronics,

Would like to get the Quorum G4567 Passive Infrared Dectector (PID) to activate an LED display for about two minutes. Attached wires to the
PID per
http://www.goldmine-elec.com/pdf/G4567.pdf
Before I began to build the circuit marked Fig. 3 on the pdf I decided to test the unit using the simple resistor and LED circuit shown in Fig. 2.
The LED stays on all the time.
When a finger constantly in front of the sensor causes the LED to burn a little brighter for a couple of seconds and then returns to the original dimmer state for about five seconds and then gets brighter. This seven second cycle repeats. This cycle is in keeping with the text on the pdf, although the text says the on time is ten seconds.
But the sensor is not an effective switch because the LED never goes off.
Is there something I am missing? Is it a defective unit?

Thanks

Did you perform the steps in the "Things to consider...." portion at the bottom of the sheet?

It doesn't show the location of P201, but that might be the key to extinguishing the LED.

I've been using these sensors for a number of years and have hacked several of them. There is some variability from one to another regarding the "off" times of 15 secs and 15 mins, but I've never had a repeating on-off cycle like you describe. I've always had the 2 sec on, 15 sec off (or 15 min off). I don't know if this will help with your possibly defective unit, but here's a link to a hack I developed to change the off time intervals to 30 and 60 secs, depending on the jumper position.

Please post if you have questions about the hack.

A quick addendum: the Quorum sensor is designed to send a 2 sec, +9VDC pulse to the traces shown in the PDF. AFAIK, that can't be easily changed, hence the little R-C timer circuit. Using the hack I posted, you can change the off interval times to make them a bit more useful. You mentioned that you want to turn on a LED display for ~ 2 mins, so a 1M linear pot would be the right choice in the timing circuit. It will keep the relay on for about 2.5 mins. I used 5VDC relays on my timers; a 9VDC may drop out too soon for your needs.
BTW, the Fresnel lens on the unit is a pain - lots of false triggers. I removed it and placed a 1" dome lens on the IR sensor. If you attach a 4" length of plastic tube onto the lens, you can make the sensor very directional. It will only "see" warm objects in the line-of-sight of the tube.

Good afternoon All ABout Circuits,

Working on passive infrared detector to activate circuit.
1. In the post dated 04-09-2011 above the Quorum G4567 is described as acting
improperly. It is surmised that this anomalous behavior is because I fried the device by connecting it to an unregulated power supply.

2. Working on a circuit to extend the length of the 'alarm on' cycle of the Quorum G4567. The schematic is found in Fig 3. at

I know it is a lot to ask, but could you check out the schematic in the pdf to see if i have faithfully reproduced it in the circuit drawn in the gif?

Thanks.

I've got a few of these, as the were on sale once for $4, which was pretty cheap back then for motion detectors, and these have a wireless transmitter (433MHz, I think). Unfortunately, I never could find a receiver, or much detail on the wireless aspect.

The diagram that comes with the unit works, you do need a lens over the sensor.

Hello All About Circuits,

Built cicuit to extend the on time of the G4567 as shown as
http://www.allenpitts.com/electronic...or_G4567_b.gif
The circuit works but the circuit does not extend the time
no matter how the I meg pot is adjusted. The relay, and the
cicruit controlled by the relayt stays on for exactly the same
time as the alarm on.
I suspect that the 100uf capacitor value needs to be adjusted.
Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Good afternoon All About,
Well guys finally got the circuit to work. It uses the G4567 to operate a timer circuit
that turns on a LED display. Video of circuit on operation.
http://youtu.be/4pd6ih1C1kA
Getting the G4567 to close a circuit wasn't too hard but geeting a timer circuit to react to the motion detector took some trial and error. If you look at the video there is a yellow LED in the upper left hand of the viseo frame that comes on when the PRI is triggered that stays on for two seconds. The yellow LED is indicating the signal from the motion detector. The Velleman timer circuit is set to turn off the LED display after four-three seconds. After about thirty seconds the PIR trips again (yellow LED). I t was hard to stay still for 43 seconds so a complete cycle of the system can be seen.
I tried using a Cana Kit circuit called CK002 as a timer circuit but could not get it to work I think because it does not reset itself.
Cana CK002 circuit:

The Velleman circuit:

This a diagram of the final system. Bill, don't bust me about it not being
a for real scehamtic diagram. I am still learning.

Thanks to Bill Marsden, SgtWookie and Otaku for their help.

Now that I have the sensor working the next step is to work on the LED
display. Looking for something a bit more interesting. May have to get
into PIC microcontoller to do something really cool. If any body knows a
good easy way to get into the microcontroller world let me know.

Thanks.

Good afternoon All About Circuits,

Got the PIR motion detector to fire off a fairly intersting LED display without human intervention. The signal output of
the PIR operates a the normally open output from a five volt relay which is wired into the K2579 as a substitute for the momentary trigger switch. (Diagram above.)

It would be preferable to use a timer kit by Cana Kit called CK002, rather than Velleman K2579 because the Cana Kit is smaller and cheaper. Both schematics are displayed herewith, below.

But when the Cana Kit CK002 is subtituted for the Velleman K2579 the CK002 only operates for as long as the signal from
the PIR, about two seconds. In other words, when set for thirty seconds and connected to the G4765, the CK002
only stays on for two seconds. When set for thirty seconds and connected to the G4765, the the K2579 stays on for thirty seconds, as intended.
I have studied the circuits for hours and have disovered several similarities. In both circuits pins six and seven of the 555 IC are shunted and are connected to a pot to adjust the time of the output. Although the K2579 has momentary and reset switches, the trigger switch can be mimicked by quickly connecting and disconnecting the power to the CK002 and the function of reset switch is obviated after the thirty seconds is up because the system has reurned to the original state.
In the CK002 pin 2 of the 555 is connected to ground thru a capacitor but in K2579 there is no capacitor between the IC pin 2 and ground.
In the K2579 pin 5 is connected to ground thru a 10K resistor, R2, but in the CK002 circuit Pin 5 is connected to ground thru a capacitor.
But thing thats really got me stumped is the transistor on the K2579. What is its function?
How can I make the CK002 function like the K2579?
Thanks.
