We are at the mercy of "scientific" journalism to understand what they are trying to do, but it seems that they are trying to calculate positions by dead-reckoning by double-integrating the output of an accelerometer.
Does any of you think this is feasible?

 

Isn’t it commonly done using an accelerometer and gyro? As I understand the two help correct each other.

 

" feasible" depends quite a bit on how accurate the result has to be. Accurate enough for a journalist may not be that difficult, but good enough to plot a course to another planet? Probably not.
