Iam looking for a chip that will interface to a PIC16F either via I2C or via bit-bashing, I need it to count pulses from a meter and store a count until the PIC polls it. Anybody use such a device! The meter can potentially give 100-200pulses per second and i rather not tie up the PIC ocunting these.

You might find it's cheaper and easier to use another PIC. Lots of room for counts in there.

 

A project like this may lend itself to a PSoC, which has hardware blocks that will do just as you describe.

You can use a counter IC like CD4510B but i think you can program the PIC to count via a digital input
