Power factor correction

I am a new maintenance tech at a large industrial plant.
I am fairly certain that the company is paying for extra lagging power factor amps that are not getting used to run our two50HP three phase air compressors and multidues of flourescent light ballast transformers. Most of the information I read says that you need to have a watt meter in series with the load in order to get the true power reading, and also an ampmeter in series to get the apparent current reading. This doesn't sound like something that would be easy to do?
