Just been in Poundland - they have, at their standard price of £1; a 2D LED torch. That's actually pretty good for a torch that must have a voltage booster in order to forward bias the LED.

For £1 I expected the actual LED to be really crap, its not marvellous but its better than I expected at the price.

I bought a torch there a while back. For that £1 I got a torch with a nicely machined aluminium body, 8 LEDs and the voltage booster. Single AA cell operation. Good light output. Subtract various profit margins and the shipping cost and it must have been produced for only a few pence.
Amusingly, Maplins ask >£1 just for 1 LED !!

Its a really cheap crappy plastic thing, but at £1 I can hardly lose.

The LED is nowhere near the performance of a puck device, but its much better than an array of 5mm LEDs.

The driver chip in its TO92 package is just marked "0118" and drives a tiny "bogus resistor" wire ended choke (47uH). The LED is a jumbo type about 10mm.
